Spiritual Companion
A spiritual companion offers guidance and companionship to help us make sense of our faith journey. A companion interprets with us the significant markers on our spiritual journey and encourages us, particularly through the most difficult transitions and valleys of our discipleship formation journey. Most of all, a spiritual companion helps us make sense of the witness of the Holy Spirit — assisting us to respond well to the question “How is God present to me and how is God, through the ministry of the Spirit, at work in my life?” Spiritual companionship is, in reality, nothing more than a way of leading us to see and obey the real Director — the Holy Spirit — hidden in the depths of our soul.

The Journey Begins
What is a Spiritual Companion?
A spiritual companion is a trained, non-judgmental guide who uses deep listening and presence to help individuals explore their inner life and connect with the Holy Spirit, as they navigate their unique spiritual journey.
Jeannette Bakke, in her book Holy Invitations: Exploring Spiritual Direction, puts it like this:
“Spiritual direction is the name given to a particular kind of helping relationship whose primary objective is to discern how God is inviting someone to be, to live, to appreciate, and to act in the midst of life.”
Who leads them?
